BBC South West enquired on the 30th "Does this mean the campaign to get trains back to Bideford has been halted? Are you disappointed by Rachel Reeves' announcement?" Our regional branch Hon. Secretary Alan Clark responded "The ACE Rail campaign, now under the wing of the Northern Devon Railway Development Alliance (NDRDA), has never been a part of the DfT's official Restoring Your Railway programme as its Ideas Fund had already closed for new bids before the ACE Rail campaign had got going. The two-pronged NDRDA campaign to upgrade and to extend (to Bideford) services on the North Devon (Tarka) Line continues unaffected by the Chancellor of the Exchequer's recent announcement. In particular, work to establish whether or not viable business cases can be developed continues unabated with key stakeholders. We feel the disappointment in all the Restoring your Railway schemes that have been halted and hope that the new government finds ways to fund vital rail links to support its plans for new housing reforms. If the Labour housing target is to build 1.5 million homes, then the new government must fund the transport infrastructure to support these communities or else this will increase deprivation in areas like Bideford."

Yet it is also hugely important to not just “settle”. Early-stage feasibility work is now underway for the Barnstaple – Bideford line to be reconnected as a follow-on to improvements from Exeter, in turn servicing new growth stimulated in and around Bideford and the wider Bideford Bay."
