Railfuture News Snippets 260 - 31/12/2014

On Wednsesday 3rd December 2014 to representatives of Railfuture East Anglia attended the Govia Thameslink Railway stakeholder meeting, at which Chief Executive Charles Horton gave a presentation.

On Thursday 29th Janaury 2015 on BBC-2 Michael Portillo will pay a site visit to the western end of the East West Rail Link, which is currently being rebuilt by Chiltern Railways for its new London Marylebone-Oxford service, during the final week of his latest series of Great British Railway Journeys. The footage was filmed in summer 2014. The works have obviously moved foward significantly since then.

Upgraded Ipswich Yard 'fully operational' after 12-week delay

Keywords: [IpswichYard]

Ipswich Yard has fully opened to rail-freight operators after an £25m upgrade project, which was supposed to have been completed in August 2014 but had been delayed by 12 weeks due to issues with the design of the new signalling system. As part of the Felixstowe to Nuneaton (F2N) enhancement programme the rail sidings were extended in order to run longer freight trains and therefore reduce congestion on the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) by carrying more freight in the same number of train paths.

Reception sidings 1, 2 and 3 now support trains with a minimum of 662 metres in length and are linked to track in both the London and Felixstowe directions. The project included new overhead line equipment on all siding extensions and altered connections. All works accommodate W10 and W12 loading gauge. The sidings are primarily for trains going via London since the opening in spring 2014 of the Ipswich Chord, built on the site of the former Harris bacon factory, allows 24 intermodal freight trains per day (each way) to use the tracks between Felixstowe and Peterborough.

Melton Constable Trust succeeds at second attempt to buy land near Fakenham for Norfolk Orbital Railway

Keywords: [NorfolkOrbitalRailway]

The Melton Constable Trust, which is the registered charity behind the Norfolk Orbital Railway project, has launched an urgent appeal to raise the funds needed to fully pay for its successful bid for former railway land at Pudding Norton near Fakenham. The land includes two bridges (one is a three-arch bridge over the River Wensum) that would be used if the proposed railway was reinstated along its original route, although the site of the old station further north has been built on. This is the second time that the land has come onto the market. The first time the charity was outbid by an individual who appears to have bought it for fun without having any idea how to use it.
