Since the 1980s Railfuture has been calling for a railway station to be built to serve Addenbrooke's Hospital in the south of Cambridge, originally as part of its proposed cross-city rail service from St Ives (on a reopened railway line) through Cambridge, via the hospital and then onto London. This ambition once looked certain, and was then cancelled when the guided busway was built. However, the creation of Biomedical Campus has completely changed the landscape south of Cambridge and the station is now seen as essential. Hopefully it will open in 2025.
