Ever since it was founded in 1972, the Railfuture East Anglia branch had been calling for the then freight-only St Ives railway line to be ropened to passengers. Key to this was a new station in the north of Cambridge to serve the Cambrdidge Science Park, which opened in 1970, and latterly the Business Park, Innovation Centre and Regional College. Sadly the railway line was not reopened, but was converted to a guided busway. Howewer, in May 2017, Cambridge North station finally opened, and Railfuture was present to see it. Hopefully by 2025, it will be joined by Cambirdge South railway station — to be built to serve Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Biomedical Campus — to provide the cross-city rail service that Railfutrue had been proposing.

When Cambridge North station opened the brownfield site was bare. At the end of 2020 the Novotel hotel was completed and site clearance for the construction of offices had commenced. The County Council's business case estimated a mere 800,000 passenger movements a year, but this was exceeded in its third year. With substantial development close to the station, it will become very busy in the future.
