Railfuture News Snippets 47 - 06/09/2000

In 1999 Peter Lawrence initiated Snippets as a weekly email news service to members of the East Anglia branch of Railfuture. He writes: "With my extra responsibilities of now (since May 2000) being Railfuture National Chairman, I realise I must give priority to Railfuture National matters and also must shed some other work. Regrettably I will have to discontinue sending out Snippets. I simply do not have the time to continue with this electronic newsletter. Circulation of Snippets has grown since the issue of No.1 from nine members to thirty-nine and I think there are more branch members whom I have not yet made contact with. It would be a pity not to continue with some form of electronic communication to members to bring news as it happens."

From the next issue of Snippets, the new editors will be branch members Martin Thorne and Jerry Alderson.

STATIONS
Norwich Station to have amusement arcade

A plan for an amusement arcade (with 50 fruit machines) in Norwich's restored Thorpe Railway Station has been given the go-ahead. However, Norwich Society Spokeswoman Sheila Kefford said the society felt the newly-renovated Grade Two listed station building was not the right location for an amusement centre.

LIGHT RAIL
Light rail suggested for Norwich

It was announced in the Eastern Daily Press in October that First Eastern Counties Buses are to initiate a study into a Light Rail System from the City Centre (St. Stephens Street) to Thorpe Railway Station. This idea has already been looked at twice by Norfolk County Council but turned down on both occasions because NCC do not believe there is sufficient population density.

Peter Lawrence believes that the Railfuture EAB should support in principal this idea but it would make more sense for the route to be extended from Norwich City Centre (St. Stephens Street) to Harford Bridge Park and Ride site/Norwich Cattle Market/Tesco area in the South of the City.

The building of a new station at Harford Bridge on the Norwich-Thetford rail route has been mooted on many occasions and the Norfolk Local Transport Plan also indicates the possibility of building a station at this site in the future. In the long term if the Light Rail scheme gets the go ahead, then a tram route from the City Centre along the old M&GN rail trackbed from the old City Station site to Thorpe Marriott Housing estate would relieve the traffic congestion in the North West part of Norwich City. The old M&GN rail route runs through the centre of this new and fast expanding Housing Estate.
