Railfuture News Snippets 1 - 31/05/1997
An introduction from Peter Lawrence, the new chair of the East Anglia branch of the Railway Development Society (RDS) — replacing Peter Wakefield — and the launch editor of 'Snippets'...
Welcome to the first issue of 'Snippets' which is a personal initiative. It is a short bulletin containing information about the railway in East Anglia. This is an electronic service, now possible as a few people have email and more are getting it each month. Future issues of 'Snippets' are intended to provide information about the railway between issues of our RAIL EAST newsletter, which is printed and distributed by post. As more people subscribe to snippets then the number of news items (and perhaps the frequency) will increase. Our branch is ahead of the game but launching this service and I do hope that you will subscribe.
Lowestoft station opened 150 years ago in 1847. On Saturday 3rd May 1997 (the anniversary date) celebrations at the station were attended by dignataries who had arrived by train. Andy Cooper, the Managing Direcror of the Anglia Railways train company (launched on 5th January 1997) was also present. There will be a long write-up of this on the cover of RAIL EAST issue 96, to be published in June 1997.
The branch was pleased to host the RDS national AGM at the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich on Saturday 3rd May. The hotel is known to be the oldest hotel in Britain, dating back over 800 years. The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Rory Quinn, welcomed members. Our main guest speaker was Lord Berkeley, Chairman of the Piggyback Consortium, which he has led since 1994 and seeks to develop new ways of carrying trucks on trains.
A reminder that our national Rail Reopenings Conference will be held in Halifax on Saturday 28th June 1997. On the following Saturday, the branch will hold a meeting at the Buntings Room in Colchester, with Bob Breakwell, Managing Director of Great Eastern Railway, as our guest speaker.
