Railfuture Terms and Conditions

Think of joining Railfuture? Please read the following first.

Terms and Conditions - Membership

All membership applications (whether submitted online [via PayPal], by post or at a Railfuture event) need to be approved by the board of directors of Railfuture Ltd. You do not become a member until the Membership Secretary confirms it in writing and issues a Railfuture Number. In the event that your application is not accepted then your account will be credited, or your cash/cheque returned.

You will become a member of Railfuture Ltd., a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. In the event that the company is wound up your liability will be limited to just £1.

We will aim to send you a membership pack within 28 days. This will be to the address that you gave when making a payment through PayPal or the address that you wrote on the membership application form.

One of the benefits of membership is being able to vote in our annual elections to the Board of Directors. Joint members are entitled to a second vote. Ballot papers are sent as an insert with Railwatch magazine. If you join after this we will endeavour, where practicable, to include the ballot paper with your membership pack but this cannot be guaranteed. Please rememmber that we are all volunteers who work from home, with no central office or internal mail system.

Terms and Conditions - Railwatch Subscribers

Subscribing to Railwatch means that you will recieve by post each issue of Railwatch at the same time that it is sent to members. You may ask to be associated with one of Railfuture's branches so that you can receive correspondence from them.

You do not have a say in the running of Railfuture and are not entitled to vote in the election of directors of Railfuture Ltd, or for the committees of a branch. You may not stand for any position within Railfuture and do not receive the annual accounts or any other statutory literature. However, you may, on a case-by-case basis, be entitled to discounts.

Terms and Conditions - Supporters

Railwatch used to offer 'Supporter' status to members of a small number of Railfuture-affiliated rail user groups. However, this ended on 30th June 2019 and supporters were converted to become Railwatch subscribers (see above).

Individuals and organsations can become supporters of Railfuture campaigns, such as Oxford-Cambridge rail link, and receive literature. This does not involve a payment, although donations are appreciated (Railfuture cannot claim Gift Aid).

Refunds / Transfer of Membership

Membership is transferrable e.g. upon death of the main member to a joint member. Life membership lasts until the death of both theiorignal and joint members.

Other than the initial period when covered by statutory rights, refunds of membership/supporter fees will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Where given they are usually based on the number of editions of Railwatch magazine remaining. Because of the administrative effort (by unpaid volunteers) of making a refund, Railfuture will not consider refunds where the amount would be less than £10.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

By joining Railfuture as a member or a supporter you are making a conscious decision to receive communications from Railfuture. However, we will only use this implied consent to provide you with the contractual obligations due as a result of you becoming a member or a supporter.

You will receive Railwatch magazine four times a year (Railfuture resrves the right to switch to, say, three larger issues per year), as that is what you are primarily paying for, and also the newsletters or bulletins from your nominated Railfuture branch, if they produce one. As a member you will also receive all company legal communication such as the annual accounts and an invitation to the Railfuture Ltd AGM and any EGM that is called, along with vital communications from the Board to members.

We will not send you further communications without your express consent. This can be given by visiting the 'Self-Care' section of the Member Services page on this website to give consents and also to select items, sucn as email publications, as your interests. We urge you to do so, otherwise you will not gain the full benefits of being a member or supporter.

If you become a Railfuture volunteer then naturally we will need to communicate with you on matters relating to your volunteering, such as being a member of a branch committee, and consents will not be required for those activities. However, distibution of certain publications, for exmaple, are driven from our database so you still need to opt in to your interests.
