North East Branch

Welcome to Railfuture North East’s webpages.

We are campaigning to improve and develop rail services in the North East of England. We cover the local authority areas within the Tees Valley, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Northumberland.

Upcoming Events

Committee Meeting: The next Branch Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday 19th March (6 pm – 8 pm) at the Shakespeare Hall in North Road, Durham. The Hall is owned by the Durham Community Association, whose sign is above the door. The hall is on the left-hand side of North Road as you walk down from the Bus Station. It is a half mile walk downhill from the Rail Station – just follow the signs to the City Centre and Bus Station. All Railfuture Members are welcome to attend. The agenda will be published on this site about a week before the meeting.

Branch AGM: The Railfuture North East Branch Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday 16th March at the Arts Centre, Westgate Road, Newcastle. The venue is a five-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station.
Our speaker this year is Simon Walton from the Campaign for Borders Rail. The campaign achieved their first aim with the re-opening of the line from Edinburgh to Tweedbank. They are now working to persuade all parties support an extension to Hawick, and then on to Carlisle. Simon is a great speaker and we can all learn a lot from his experiences in this campaign.
We will take a short tea/coffee break after the speaker and then move into a short business meetin, including a report from the chair and treasurer followed by election of officers for the next year.

Railfuture Summer Conference Conference: Om Saturday 22nd June the North East Branch are hosting the Railfuture Summer Conference. Come and join us at the Dolphin Centre in Darlington from 10:30 – 4:30. Speakers will include the elected Mayor of Teesside and representatives of Hitachi, NEXUS, The Esk Valley Railway Development Company, and the Port of Sunderland. The overall theme is “Rebirth of the Railway” – a theme that is particularly appropriate for a conference held at one end of the Stockton – Darlington railway. Please note that there is a discount, available to members only, for ‘early bird’ bookings. Save £2.50 if you book by April 30th We still need volunteers to help us on the day. If you can help, please get in touch with Ian Walker ian.walker2@googlemail.com or 0191 372 053

  • Improve the rail service north of Morpeth on the ECML
  • Ensure that the Pacers are replaced by much improved rolling stock on local services
