Feasibility studies will be conducted on three routes: Streatham-Croydon-Purley, Beckenham Junction-Crystal Palace and Mitcham Junction-Tooting-Sutton. The Crystal Palace extension would replace existing rail services with a more frequent tram service.

Any or all of the three routes could be taken forward. Estimates for the cost of building the shortlisted extensions range from £500m to £800m.

Supporters of the tram network extensions should not hold their breath for construction to begin.

The announcement of the favoured routes was originally due a year ago. TfL light transit project director Martin Dean is quoted as saying there is no current timescale for the extensions.

On report suggest a decision on whether to proceed with the Crystal Palace extension is expected in summer 2004.
