MPs have highlighted the daily trauma suffered by rail passengers through overcrowding.

In a report published on 15 October 2003, the MPs said passengers were sometimes forced into intolerable conditions.

The House of Commons Transport Committee said the ways of monitoring overcrowding were fundamentally flawed.

Meanwhile Transport Secretary Alistair Darling launched rolling stock designed to reduce overcrowding.
