Northumberland County Council has commissioned Network Rail to complete the examination of the best options for the Ashington Blyth and Tyne reopening scheme, putting up £750,000 for further studies and scheme design.

The county council is talking with stakeholders, including developers and the Local Transport Board, to put together a funding package to secure the project if it gets the go-ahead.

Up to £60 million will be needed to restore passenger services on the freight-only line, with the aim of improving access from south-east Northumberland to employment opportunities over a wider regional area, and to provide an incentive for employers to relocate to the area.

The project will require line speed and signalling improvements, a passing loop and new stations. Read more.
