Corby’s new rail station has won an award just 16 months after it opened.

It has been named best medium-sized station out of East Midlands Trains’ 89 stations.

Staff from Corby booking office accepted the award last week. Judges praised the success of the newly opened station, and the staff who work closely together to deliver a professional, high quality service to customers.

David Fursdon of campaign group Railfuture said the award was well deserved.

He added: “Although Corby station is still in its infancy, passenger numbers are growing all the time. We just need to get the Corby trains connecting better at Kettering for northbound services.

“The faster journey times to London have proved popular, with an average journey time of just one hour 13 minutes between Corby and the capital.”

He said the opening of the Loco Coco cafe at the station has proved a great asset.

Kelly Betchley of Passenger Focus who helped to judge the awards, said: “Stations are the gateway to a passenger’s railway journey.

"Our latest research shows that passengers rate East Midlands Trains’ stations higher than the national average and these awards recognise and applaud the company’s efforts to improve passengers’ experience. Keep up the good work!”

David Horne, customer service director for EMT, said: “These awards are a reflection of the hard work that goes on at our stations day in, day out.”

Corby station will now go into the National Rail Awards compettion organised by RAIL magazine, along with EMT’s best small station (Blythe Bridge), best large station (London St Pancras) and most improved station (Leicester).

Derby, Sheffield, Beeston and Narborough received highly commended awards.
