Railfuture East Anglia has launched its award scheme to celebrate stations which have seen significant improvements to their accessibility and make them easy, comfortable and attractive stations to use.

Mock-up of a plaque paid for by Railfuture East Anglia that it has proposed be erected at Greater Anglia stations where recent improvements have been made

The award aims to encourage better access for people with limited mobility including the elderly, disabled and young families by drawing attention to good practice.
Awards will be made on a continual basis as stations achieve 'gold' or 'silver' standard based on the following criteria:

  • Toilets inc. for PRM and ‘baby changing
  • ’Step free access to all platforms
  • Parking including spaces for People with Restricted Mobility within reasonable distance of:-
  • Waiting room well lit heated and comfortable
  • All weather access to trains from station entrance
  • Platform depth permitting 2 x PRM to pass
  • Tactile paving on platform edge
  • Even platform surface free of hollows / ‘trips’
  • Functioning/compliant passenger information
  • Help points
  • Hearing loops
  • Closed Circuit Television Monitoring (CCTV)
  • Cycle Racks / Stands

The work is judged on what has been achieved in the most recent 12 months, with a 'Gold’ award for ‘best practice’ (all/most boxes ticked) and ‘Silver’ award for improvements/progress (most ticks added following recent works).

Certificates and plaques will be presented to winners.

We invite nominations from anyone, including:
  • Railfuture members

There is no need to provide a detailed justification, although a background to your nomination would be useful.

Lifts were opened in summer 2016 at Manningtree Station to give access to the island platform. Railfuture East Anglia gave this as an example of necessary improvements in its East Stations Award scheme

Presentation slides from the Suffolk Rail Conference about the award can be downloaded here www.railfuture.org.uk/east/docs/Railfuture-East-Anglia-Easy-Stations-Presentation-to-Suffolk-Rail-Conference-October-2016.pdf

The awards have been made possible by the generous legacy of Clara Zilahi.
