Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern franchise

We are pleased to hear the new TSGN (Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern) franchise has been awarded to Govia covering a transformational period, 15 Sept. 2014-14 Sept 2021, for the largest franchise in the UK; by 2018 a new fleet of trains will take passengers from Peterborough and Cambridge directly through the capital to south London and Gatwick Airport, and giving a direct connection to Crossrail.

The new franchise promises a 50% boost in passenger capacity into London during peak hours by 2018, improving station facilities, ticketing, customer information systems and station staffing hours at more than 100 of the largest stations.

Govia run the Southern Railways, London Midland and South Eastern train services so have good experience running services into London. Railfuture East Anglia looks forward to working with them in developing the railway network to support the high growth demands of the greater Cambridge and Peterborough areas plus East Anglia generally. Full details are in the enclosed attachment.

All services to and from south of Thames will be in the hands of the new Siemans Cl.700, whilst the fast service off peak between King's Lynn and King's Cross, will continue running to Kings Cross station, initially with the current refurbished Cl 365s, but from 2016 Cl.377s. On all fronts this promises to be the most managerially challenging franchise yet. So good luck travellers and staff.
