Railfuture Oxford to Cambridge (East West Rail) campaign Briefing note on route options for the Central Section from Bedford to Cambridge
The Government has approved and funded a new railway, using former and existing rail routes, between Bedford and Oxford via Milton Keynes with a spur to Aylesbury and High Wycombe. This is the 'Western Section' of the East West Rail Link.
Attached to this letter is a series of maps, with some descriptive text, setting out the possible routing corridors of a new railway west of Cambridge to Bedford. This link from Cambridge (and East Anglia) to the Government's new railway west of Bedford to Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, Bicester and Oxford will a create a fast high quality, high capacity route right across this fast developing national economic powerhouse.
We think that the new railway should be routed to be of the greatest use to Cambridge and Cambridgeshire in that it could be routed to help alleviate some of the south of the county’s transport problems as it expands into new settlements. You will see from Option B1 that a northerly route west of Cambridge would enable it to serve Cambourne and the proposals for Bourn Airfield.
The northern route would join the high speed East Coast Mainline in the St Neots area. We recommend that services be developed that take advantage of this route's speed attributes with high volume trains linking Peterborough, Alconbury, Huntingdon and St Neots to Cambourne and Cambridge as well as fast trains from Oxford, Milton Keynes and Bedford to Cambridge.
We will contribute these outline ideas to the current consultations taking place for the various District Council Local Plans and to that for updating the County Transport Plan. Many hundreds of people right across the region have already pledged support for the complete East West Rail Link. We hope that you can do so too by making sure these proposals get properly debated.
