Summary of current re-franchising

South Eastern new franchise - was planned from 1 April 2019 - Invitation To Tender issued to the short-listed bidders, for their Best and Final Offers by 14 March. New franchise contract award, expected November 2018, deferred during Westminster Hall debate on 27 November by new Rail Minister Andrew Jones MP to early-2019, confirmed in December 2018 as extension of Direct Award to 22 June 2019. In Written Statement on 10 April 2019 Transport Secretary Grayling confirms further short-term extension to 10 November 2019, with option until April 2020. Great Western new franchise - consultation 29 November 2017 - 21 February 2018. Submission of Passport Application/Pre-Qualification Questionnaire for non-passport holders due June 2018. Expressions of Interest invited from bidders. Stakeholder Briefing Document, and Government response to consultation concluded February 2018 published 28 August 2018. New Direct Award expected to 2022.
Cross Country new franchise - was due from February 2020 - franchise consultation launched on 7 June, until 30 August 2018. Prospectus launched on 6 July, re-issued 20 September 2018. Submission of Passport Application/Pre-Qualification Questionnaire for non-passport holders; potential bidders invited to submit Expressions of Interest issued on 6 July, re-issued 20 September 2018. Invitation To Tender was due to be issued 24 January 2019 for return in April, followed by contract award in October 2019 for February 2020 start of new franchise. STOP PRESS: refranchising halted 20 September 2018, pending rail review.

~ 21 July 2018 onwards - station rebuild at Glasgow Queen Street (which marked its 177th birthday in February 2019) with changed entry and exit arrangements. Fit for a Queen Street, thanks to local artist. Demolition work complete. December 2018 Big lift! February 2019 sneak-peak! Then and now - with VIDEO. In April 2019, new platforms on track. Early-June rebranding of station as Glasgow 'Green' Street. Late-June confirmation of platform extensions open in July 2019. Services amended as platform extensions commissioned. Meanwhile, adding a touch of glass! Successful commissioning of platforms 2 and 3 - WATCH VIDEO, 4 and 5 will now follow from mid-September to mid-October. Step inside the redeveloped station. ~ 14 December 2019-17 May 2020 - service suspensions and alterations on GTR Great Northern's Northern City Line.
~ 25/26 January-28/29 March - final phase of works, ongoing since 31 August 2019, to upgrade the Southend Victoria line resumes, continuing until 28/29 March with weekend services altered/suspended now to a revised programme.
~ 15-21 February - services suspended on Heart of Wessex line.
~ 15-23 February - services suspended between Colne and Blackburn and altered between Blackburn, Accrington and Burnley. You have just been given a REMINDER.
~ 15-23 February - services suspended on Bexleyheath line (Kidbrooke-Barnehurst) for major landslip prevention and other works. Use the new online travel advice tool.
~ 15-23 February - services suspended in Cornwall between Truro and Penzance for upgrade works, including between St. Erth and St. Ives until 20 February.
~ 17-23 February - services suspended on Norfolk's Wherry Lines for major signalling upgrade works. REMINDER.
~ 22/23 February - services suspended via Eastleigh for emergency works after freight train derailment.
~ 22/23 February - suspended and amended Midland Main Line weekend services south of Leicester.
