Brexit

The decision on 23 June 2016 by 51.9% of voters in the UK’s referendum to choose ‘Brexit’ has certainly led to one of the most turbulent political period in the UK for many decades. It will take many months and probably several years before the repercussions are fully understood.

Britain’s railway had been going through a golden period for a decade. It is vital that the political and economic changes that Brexit has already caused and will continue to have influence over do not lead harm the railway.

Immediately following the appointment of Chris Grayling as the new Secretary of State for Transport, Railfuture wrote an open letter to him that included a Top Ten of priorities for Britain’s railway.

Railfuture has also produced a series of articles on how Brexit may affect the railway. Whilst these may seem negative they are intended to highlight risks so that rail campaigners such as Railfuture can act now to secure the railway’s future.  Railfuture has always been and remains agnostic on the UK’s membership of the EU.

Brexit and the Railway - How passengers are unlikely to notice little change in the day-to-day running of Britain’s railway after the UK leaves.

Brexit rail economics - Deals with the possible economic impact that Brexit may bring to the railway the harmful effects if politicians do not stand up for Britain’s railway.

Brexit and Railfreight - What Brexit may mean to the fragile and volatile rail-freight market.

Railfuture's Peter Wakefield appeared on BBC Look East on 11 July 2016 to talk about the delay announcing the Greater Anglia franchise winner because of the economic uncertainty following the vote for Brexit. Watch the news story.

Railfuture has written an article about Brexit for the September 2016 edition of Rail Professional magazine.

More insight can be found in a 47-page briefing paper for the House of Commons produced on 18 June 2016 entitled Brexit: how will it affect transport?  This covers all transport modes, not just the railway.
