The Government's decision to make councils to paint speed cameras yellow is being challenged by road safety campaigners on Thursday 20 March 2003.

The protest is in response to the Government's order that all fixed speed cameras (in speed camera partnership areas) are painted yellow and sited so that every motorist could clearly see them.

The Government has subsequently admitted that a key factor in taking this decision was tabloid hysteria about speed cameras trapping what it described as innocent motorists. To everyone else, that means drivers who determinedly break the law.

Living Streets is supporting Transport 2000's and the Slower Speeds Initiative's campaign to have these rules overturned, and the case will be heard in the High Court on 20 March.

Campaigners will assemble for a photo call at 09.00 outside the main gates to the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand.

The nearest tube station is Chancery Lane - if the Central Line is working - or Temple, on the District and Circle Lines.

The event will be simple and peaceful.
