Even Britain is taking an active part in car-free day this year after the success of the days in other parts of Europe.

In towns and cities throughout Britain on 22 September, a series of events including street closures are being planned, to give people a taste of how life could be, freed from the tyranny of traffic.

More than 6000 tons and cities in 23 European countries are definitely taking part.

An opinion poll last year showed that 80% of people thought it was a good idea.

In London, the 'flagship' event this year will focus on Tower Bridge which will be closed to all motor traffic for the day between Tower Hill and Queen Elizabeth Street.

The bridge will be closed to all motor traffic for the day, and various events will be organised on the approach roads to the bridge on both sides of the river.

Other London boroughs taking part include Camden where the proposed road closure on Endell Street at its junction with Betterton Street is going ahead. Additional road closures will be Monmouth Street, Earlham Street, Mercer Street, Shorts Gardens, Tower Street and Neal Street.

In Richmond upon Thames there will be a 'small-scale event' at The Causeway, Teddington, near Teddington rail station. There will be a round-the-borough charity bike ride.

Other places are also finalising their plans, including Croydon, Ealing, Greenwich, Hackney, Haringey, Lambeth, Merton, and Southwark.
