Today is Cycle To Work Day and to mark the day ScotRail announced progress in its programme to expand cycle parking at stations.

Since the start of the current franchise, Abellio ScotRail has installed 600 cycle parking spaces, as part of a commitment to sustainable access and smart, integrated travel.

The cycle spaces complement the Bike & Go hire scheme, which is available at 10 stations.

Edinburgh Haymarket, Largs and Linlithgow, where Bike & Go has been introduced this year, are among the stations which have extra cycle parking – 66, 48 and 40 new spaces respectively.

Fourteen other stations have benefited from new cycle spaces since April last year.

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said: “Offering passengers more facilities like cycle spaces at stations is a core part of our vision to make the railway as accessible as possible.”
ScotRail’s Ian McConnell said: “Travelling by train is already a great choice for the environment. More and more of our passengers are cycling to the station as part of their daily commute or for leisure travel, and we want to encourage more people to do the same.

Daisy Narayanan of Sustrans Scotland added: “We welcome this increase in cycle parking spaces to encourage people to leave their bike at the station and use the train as part of their everyday journeys.

“Cycling is a great way for people of all age groups to increase their level of physical activity and improve their health and wellbeing.

“We are continuing to work in partnership with communities and organisations across Scotland to make journeys by foot, bicycle and public transport easier and simpler.”

Stations which have had additional cycle spaces installed since April 2015: Bathgate – 48 additional spaces, Dalgety Bay – 66, Drem – 32, Falkirk High – 16, Hamilton Central – 24, Edinburgh Haymarket – 66, Inverkeithing – 52, Larbert – 50, Largs – 48, Lenzie – 20, North Berwick – 10, Polmont – 14, Uddingston – 26, Dumfries – 42, Gourock – 30, Livingston North – 24, Linlithgow – 40.
