RfNE: The Northumberland Line

- This line through Hepscott that connects the ECML to the Northumberland Line is part of proposals for further expansion of the passenger routes on the former Blyth and Tyne, with a new station also being constructed to replace one long-lost at Choppington, which stood just to the west of the A1068 level crossing near the former White Swan pub. - We campaign to improve and develop rail services in the North East of England.
The North East branch covers the ~~loc~~al authorities in the Tees Valley, ~~Cou~~nty ~~Durh~~am, Wearside, Tyneside, and Northumberland. This in~~cludes~~ the two mayoral auth~~oriti~~es namely Tees Valley Combined Authority and North East Combined Authority.

The North East branch covers from Berwick-Upon Tweed in the far north of England, as far south as Whitby (itself in Yorkshire but connected by rail via Teesside), and across west as far as Haltwhistle. This areas encompasses the local authorities in Northumberland, those in the Tyne and Wear area, County Durham and Tees Valley, as well as the broader Tees Valley Combined Authority, and North East Combined Authority.

West London Orbital - a new outer orbital route linking major suburban centres (eg in Barnet, Harrow, Hounslow, Ealing, and at Brent Cross, West Hampstead) around outer west and north-west London. This ~~cou~~l~~d a~~lso be achieved by linking existing heavy rail routes ~~with~~ ~~new chords, by new tra~~m~~ways, or by a~~ c~~ombination of t~~h~~e two -~~ like the existing orbital Overground network~~, it can be made up of a number of connecting services~~. In April 2023 engineering design work started. See presentation to PWI in March 2025.

Skelmersdale - Kirkby. The West Lancashire Master Plan (p.29) includes re-connecting Skelmersdale (pop. c.40k) to the rail network with a new rail station and bus interchange in the town centre. The development is in the package of twelve rail priorities which make up the Liverpool City Region Long Term Rail Strategy published by Merseytravel in 2014. Lancashire County Council commissioned an Outline Business Case, for a new branch line from Rainford to a former college site in Skelmersdale town centre, which was published in August 2021 but then rejected by the government in July 2022 as too expensive. An alternative suggestion was made in October 2025 for a 'parkway' station at the edge of Skelmersdale on the existing line, with an extension of Merseyrail services and regular bus connections to the town centre.
