Railfuture vice president Caroline Lucas called for better and more affordable public transport when she made her maiden speech in the House of Commons on Friday 28 May 2010.

Ms Lucas, who became Britain’s first Green MP by winning Brighton Pavilion at the general election, said: "We must act so that the United Kingdom can meet its own responsibilities to cut the emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that are changing our climate, and encourage and support other countries to do the same.

"This House has signed up to the 10:10 Campaign - 10% emissions reductions in 2010. That's very good news. But the truth is that we need 10% emission cuts every year, year on year, until we reach a zero carbon economy.”
Ms Lucas, 49, who was previously an MEP, said she looked forward to working with Members from all sides of the House of Commons.
She won her Commons seat with an 8% swing and a majority of 1,200 votes. The Greens have 13 councillors on Brighton and Hove City Council.
