The Development of Railway Financial Statements 1827 - 1948
By Tony Sheward.
Item code: DRFS.
Published in October 2014 by Railfuture's Reporting Accountant (and its former Treasurer), Tony Sheward, as his first venture as an author. This A4 book (making use of railway company records in the National Archives) charts the way in which railway companies presented financial information to their shareholders from the early days of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway to nationalisation of the railways in 1948.
The book analyses the influence of various factors, such as the example of the canals, railway regulation, company law and the railway companies’ individual pattern of development. This is an area of railway research, which has hitherto only been sparsely covered.
Out of the wealth of railway company reports and accounts available in the National Archives, the author has examined in detail those of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the first major railway, as well as four companies, which have continuous records from the early Victorian period up to Grouping in 1923; Great Western Railway, London & South Western Railway, London & North Western Railway, Midland Railway and Taff Vale Railway.
Railfuture is able to offer the book for £18.00, inclusive of postage, (a discount of £2.00) and every purchase will also support the campaigning work done by Railfuture.
The author will sign the book if you request. Please include this as a comment when purchasing with PayPal.
