Railfuture's Regional Mini-Conference (East Anglia East Midlands and Lincolnshore) held in Peterborough, at its Museum and Art Gallery, had five speakers involved with the rail industry.
The mini-conference was split into three parts:
The speakers were specially chosen as they are a key representative or their organsations and generally have a wealth of experience. They are also good public speakers. They will give informative and enjoyable presentations.
Martijn's role including open access rail operators Lumo and Hull Trains, Croydon Tramlink and the London Cable Car. He has extensive experience in the transport sector with previous roles at Arriva in both their bus and rail divisions, as CEO of Council Owned Reading Buses and joined First from The Go-Ahead Group where he was Managing Director of their North East and East Yorkshire regional bus operations.
He is also a Non-Exec Director of the North East England Ambulance Service NHS Trusts' Unified Solutions fleet maintenance division. He previously served two terms as a Non-Exec Board member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), the sector's professional development body.
Martijn was interviewed (grilled) at length on the Greensignals podcast earlier in 2025, and robustly defended the role of open-access passenger in benefiting passengers. He can speak on behalf of First Group and its open-access operations and ambitions, but obviously he cannot speak on behalf of other open-access groups.
Anthony is the founder and director of consultancy Consumer Focus. But he will bne presenting at this confernec ein his role as Chair of tjhe Independent Rail Retailers. He is also Chair of the Heathrow Area Transport Forum, National Transport Awards and the Customer Service Excellence category at the National Rail Awards. Anthony is also a member of the Affinity Water Independent Challenge Group.
For many years, Anthony was the chief executive at Transport Focus (formerly known as Passenger Focus). He helped it to become a respected consumer organisation with its work (high quality research) being relied on and commissioned by many. Prior to that he worked at the Consumers' Association, Consumers International, as a solicitor and the regulator of premium rate telephone services.
On his LinkedIn page, Anthony says that he has "broad and deep experience in consumer representation and policy, legal services, leadership, stakeholder management, media and public speaking" and that he has "started to help build Independent Rail Retailers into an effective, useful trade body." He has also "helped Heathrow Area Transport Forum focus on key issues: improving bus services, Heathrow Southern Rail project and parking issues.
The Independent Rail Retailers (IRR) is the membership and lobbying group representing Britain's independent ticket retailers. It was established in 2017. Anthony took over the chairmanship (in Januarey 2024) from Alistair Lees, Managing Director of Assertis, who had held it for seven years (news story. He will be speaking in general terms about the third-party retailers who sell rail tickets, but obviously he cannot speak on behalf of any individual retailer.
Lewis leads on the transport planning function for the Council, working closely with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. He covers a wide range of areas including policy / strategy, infrastructure planning and development as well as developing major scheme business cases. Working in a small team, he covers all areas of transport planning including active travel, electric vehicle infrastructure, major highway schemes, public transport and interactions with rail services.
He is part of the project team for the Peterborough Station Quarter initiative.
