Railfuture's 2019 Summer Conference was held at the Dolphin Centre, Darlington, on Saturday 22nd June.
Entitled "Rebirth of the Railway" emphasis was on new developments occurring in the industry - and what better place to locate the event than Darlington where railway history truly began?
Key inputs came from reps of Hitachi Rail Europe, Tyne and Wear Metro, the Port of Sunderland, Esk Valley Rail Development Company and Heather Scott, Leader of Darlington Council and Cabinet Member for Transport with Tees Valley Combined Authority.
Situated on the East Coast Main Line, Darlington is served by direct services from London, the South West, Birmingham, Manchester and the North West, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Added to which the conference venue is only ten minutes' walk from the station.
Lunch and light refreshments were included in the conference fee of £15 (early bird bookings, restricted to members only, were available until 30th April for £12.50).
And why not stay for a couple of days and visit some of the local attractions? Locomotion, (part of the National Rail Museum) at Shildon for instance is just a short ride from Darlington, or the glorious Esk Valley and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - not to mention Whitby - or the famous Beamish Open Air Museum near Chester-Le-Street. There are plenty of decent hotels and B&Bs in Darlington and district. Come on - don't hold back. Get to Darlington for 22nd June and enjoy a really great Summer Conference!
