Rail campaigners welcome East Coast win

Railfuture welcomes today's announcement that Stagecoach and Virgin have won the East Coast franchise. "This brings to an end a period of uncertainty for East Coast staff who have been doing an excellent job of running the railway" said spokesman Bruce Williamson.

"We welcome the additional services to destinations in the North of England, particularly Yorkshire. As ever, passengers concerns include the level of fares and overcrowding, so the additional seats on the new trains will be very welcome. We will continue to push for cheaper fares and a simpler fare structure."

"Railfuture is keen to work with Inter City Railways to further improve the network for passengers. Disruption handling still remains one of the very highest priorities."
