East West

East West Rail

Between Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford, Cambridge, and Ipswich.

Years of campaigning by Railfuture and other groups paid off in 2012 when the Government gave the go-ahead for part of the project, from Oxford to Bedford.

East West Rail Link can eventually provide an outer orbital railway to the north of London, linking the Great Western main line, Oxford, Bicester, Milton Keynes, Bedford, Cambridge, Ipswich and Norwich for both passenger and freight traffic.

EWRL is being promoted by the East-West Rail Consortium of local authorities and interested bodies along the route.

The western section from Oxford to Bedford was approved by the Government in November 2011, with completion expected in 2017. In July 2012, the Government confirmed funding for the project and also for electrification of the Oxford-Bedford part of the route.

EWR will eventually provide an electric link between the electrified Great Western, West Coast and Midland main lines.
