The InterCity Story - 1964-2012
By Chris Green and Mike Vincent.
Item code: ICS.
InterCity was the flagship of British Rail's passenger network. Launched in the early 1960s, following the Beeching report, the brand was created by BR to highlight its long-distance and express passenger services, and it came to dominate long-distance railway travel.
InterCity-branded services were to be seen throughout the BR network serving the East and Coast main lines, the Midland main line, the Great Western and Great Eastern main lines as well as the complex network of routes that formed the northeast-southwest corridor.
The InterCity Story was compiled by Chris Green and Mike Vincent in 1994 just prior to the break-up of the business in preparation for franchising. That original book provided a detailed history of InterCity from its origins in the 1960s through to the early 1990s, and speculated on its post-Privatisation future.
This new edition, which has been revised by Chris Green and Mike Vincent to mark twenty years since the Railways Act 1993 that restructured the rail industry, brings the story up-to-date by reflecting how the various franchisees have handled their routes.
The authors write with authority as they know all the significant and influential figures from both eras, and provide a first-hand and revealing account of almost 50 years of railway history.
Since his retirement from the rail industry, having run both BR's InterCity service and latterly Virgin Trains, Chris Green is now a Railfuture vice president, and has spoken at several Railfuture conferences most notably at the time of launching Operation Princess for Virgin Trains.
The book is only available in hardback format.
