West Midlands Branch

West Midlands, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire & Herefordshire (excluding Newport-Shrewsbury-Crewe)

On May 4th the whole of the West Midlands are being asked to vote for a Mayor of the West Midlands. In advance of this Railfuture West Midlands is organising a Transport Forum in Birmingham at which at least four of the five main candidates Mayor will be answering questions from the public about transport.

Confirmed panelists are James Burn (Green Party), Pete Durnell (UKIP), Beverley Nielson (Liberal Democrat), Andy Street (Conservative).

We very pleased to welcome Birmingham Friends of the Earth who will be assisting Railfuture West Midlands with promoting the event and be providing stewards on the day.

Also, we are delighted to have obtained the services of Lorna Slade, editor of Rail Professional and a Railfuture Vice President, to chair our forum.

Date : Thursday, 6th April 2017 – 18:00-21:00. Event will start 1830.
Venue: Council House, Banqueting Suite, Victoria Square, Birmingham B1 1BB

The new Mayor will be in effect the chairman of the West Midlands Combined Authority. Transport will form a major part of this role and s)he will have a budget of £8 billion to allocate (but not just to transport).

The Forum is free to all and we hope that many Railfuture members and other rail users will attend. It should be of interest even if you don’t live in the West Midlands itself as many decisions made here are likely to have impacts on neighbouring counties.

You can also submit questions in advance - email them to steve.wright at railfuture.org.uk.

West Midlands AGM 2017 - Guest Speaker Christian Wolmar

The 2017 branch AGM wll be held on Saturday 22nd April. The official business will include receiving reports from officers and electing officers for 2017-18 including the officer posts of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and other committee members.

Date : Saturday 22nd April, 1400 to 1700

In 2016 it was with great disappointment that our invited guests Nigel Harris (Managing Editor of RAIL magazine) and Christian Wolmar (transport journalist, author and regular RAIL columnist and Railfuture's Honorary President) both had to withdraw at the last moment. The good news is that Christian will be speaking this year.
